Hong Kong Legal Fellowship 2023

Justice Without Borders (“JWB”) is welcoming applications for the Legal Fellowship programs at our Hong Kong Office for the period between May to December 2023.

What our Fellows will be doing

Legal Fellows will engage in legal projects on behalf of migrant domestic workers who have been victims of labour and financial exploitation, discrimination, or survivors of abuse. As a Fellow, you will take an active role in one or more projects, including preparing cases for litigation, conducting strategic legal research, and preparing and participating in training workshops. You will also have the opportunity to work closely with our colleagues and partners across Indonesia, the Philippines, and Singapore.

Time Commitment

We are looking for student volunteers who are passionate about access to justice for migrant domestic workers to join us part-time (1.5 to 2 days a week) or full-time. For a truly meaningful engagement, applicants should be able to volunteer with us for at least 3 months. Fellows are not expected to commit during the exam period.

The time commitment required of Legal Fellows for the duration of the Fellowship are as stated below. 

  • May 2023 to August 2023 (Summer):
  • Full-time (Monday to Friday) or Part-time (preference will be given to those who can commit on a full-time basis)
  • September 2023 to December 2023 (Fall Semester):
  • Part-time (Fellows are not expected to commit during the exam period)

Candidate Qualifications

We are looking for students who are interested in our area of work, self-motivated, able to work in a team, and are not afraid to take on new challenges outside of their comfort zone. 

Required:

  • Currently studying a qualifying law degree (e.g. LLB, JD);
  • Fluency in English with strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Strong legal research skills;
  • Ability to work well in a multicultural team;
  • Excellent time management and organisation skills;
  • Willing to take initiative and actively address issues that come up during work; and
  • Professionalism

Desirable but not required:

  • Speaking, reading, and writing ability in Tagalog or Bahasa Indonesia; 
  • Graphic design and layout skills;
  • Photography skills; and
  • Knowledge of website and social media tools, including WordPress, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn
